Palliative Care vs. Hospice: What’s the Difference and How Does It Work at Buena Vida?

At Buena Vida Estates, we believe it’s important to talk about these options clearly and compassionately – not just because they’re part of aging, but because knowing your options brings peace of mind. And for our residents, that includes knowing that hospice care can come right here, without needing to leave the community they call home.

First, What’s the Difference Between Palliative Care and Hospice?

While both palliative care and hospice care focus on comfort and quality of life, they’re not the same:

Palliative Care

  • Can be provided at any stage of illness
  • Focuses on relief from symptoms, pain, and stress
  • Often delivered alongside curative treatment
  • Designed to improve quality of life for people with serious or chronic conditions

Hospice Care

  • For individuals with a terminal diagnosis, typically with a prognosis of six months or less
  • Focuses entirely on comfort rather than cure
  • Provides emotional, spiritual, and physical support for both the patient and their family
  • Typically covered by Medicare and provided wherever the individual lives, including here at Buena Vida Estates

Hospice Does Come to Buena Vida

One common misconception is that hospice care requires a move to a different facility. At Buena Vida Estates, that’s not the case.

Because we are a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), residents must enter while living independently; however, they’ll have access to additional levels of care within the same community if needed – including support from hospice providers if and when that time comes.

We work with local, trusted hospice agencies that provide services right here on our campus.

Why This Matters for Residents and Families

When people choose Buena Vida Estates, they’re often thinking about living well now. But part of the promise of a CCRC is planning for the “what ifs” down the road, without having to worry about uprooting your life.

That includes:

  • Moving in while fully independent
  • Knowing that assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory care are available if needed
  • Having access to hospice services on-site, should the time come

This approach offers something many families don’t realize they need until later: stability. Residents aren’t forced to search for care in a moment of crisis or relocate during an already emotional time.

Planning Ahead Brings Peace of Mind

Talking about palliative or hospice care isn’t easy, but it’s part of thoughtful planning. Whether you’re exploring Buena Vida Estates for yourself or a loved one, it’s reassuring to know that:

  • We support care that evolves with your needs
  • You’ll never face these decisions alone
  • Comfort, dignity, and familiarity remain priorities every step of the way
